*Noon: Afternoon Paddle on the Ossipee River, 7 mile paddle. Quickwater, class I-II rips. Maine Path & Paddle Guides

*9:00-3:00: Canoe Poling on the Saco River. Learn the basics of canoe poling on moving water going both upstream and down. Chip Cochrane.

Paddling/Poling/Sailing Styles Demonstration. Let the workshop instructors provide a glimpse of the types of canoeing techniques you'll get a chance to learn.

 

All Weekend:

Children's Workshops -Learn to set up a camp, do macrame, voyager competition, swim, campfire, skits, beginning paddling, and various arts and crafts. Inty Wiggy will be the drop-off and pick up site. Tim & Charlotte Emery, Lani Cochrane, Shaun Rock, Harry Rock, Jeff & Lisa Dehart.

Northwoods Balladeer, Jerky Maker, Baxketmaker, & Traditional Outdoorsman-Find Matthew Heintz at his traditional tent at the north end of camp all weekend. Matthew Heintz.

Voyager Display- Visit this hands-on, living history exhibit at the north end of camp all weekend. Jeff & Lisa Dehart.

Northwoods/Maine Guide Campsite Display- Visit Dave and Lynn Lewis' traditional campsite that illustrates time honored camping skills that are as effective today as they were a hundred years ago.

Canoe Building Demonstration- See a set of small canoes that demonstrate the entire process of building a wood & canvas canoe in Junior Wiggy all weekend. Burt Libby.

9:30-10:45 AM

Introduction to Paddling- Learn the basics of paddling or polish your basic strokes with a talented instructor. Polly Mahoney.

Introduction to Freestyle Paddling-Learn some ways to make your boat's shape and momentum work for you...stop working so hard! Kim Gass.

Norhwoods Paddling - Learn the paddling strokes that are firmly rooted in Maine. It takes some time to learn this style, but once you get it you'll be glad you learned it. Jane Barron.

Modern Poling - You don't use a paddle in this workshop. Instead, you learn to propel your canoe with a pole while standing in your canoe. This is a great technique for going up stream. Harry Rock.

Whitewater Ferries - Learn the special strokes that are required to move your canoe sideways across rapids. RoryMatchett.

Double Bladed Paddling-Learn how to paddle a canoe with a double bladed paddle, a very comfortable, efficeint, and enjoyable way to move a boat. Geoff Burke.

Plan and Guide a Canoe Trip-Learn how to plan an extended canoe trip with Master Maine Guide Gil Gilpatrick.

Simple skills: "Root Baskets": Join us as we make a root basket with what we collect from the woods.  This is something all of you can do on a canoe trips.  They are very durable and make nice collecting baskets. Jen Ries

Choose a Maine River-Discover the many wonderful rivers and streams to explore in Maine. Pick one that fits your skill. Mike & Shauna Patterson.

Campfire Cooking & Baking-Learn how to cook over an open fire and bake with a reflector oven. Dave & Lynne Lewis.

Improving the J-Stroke - Having difficulty getting the J-stroke to do what you want? Get the J-stroke analyzed and corrected. Kevin Slater.

Sit & Switch Paddling - Minimize the need for corrective strokes and maximize your speed. An effective technique for flat water cruising. Jim & Lisa Lisius

Double Bladed Paddling-Learn how to paddle a canoe with a double bladed paddle, a very comfortable, efficeint, and enjoyable way to move a boat. Geoff Burke.

Traditional Tandem Paddling-Learn traditional techniques for paddling a canoe in tandem. Caleb Davis.

Recreational Poling - Traditional poling using a wooden pole. Learn techniques and the history of poling. Kevin Silliker.

Researching a Trip-How do you discover all that you need to know before making a wilderness trip? The Peakes.

Map & Compass-Learn the basics of finding your way through the wilds. Tim Emery & Buzz Butler.

Art for Kids-Outdoor Art projects for the younger attendees to the Symposium. Join all those who are young at heart and create your own artwork. Shaun Rock.

Tripping Strokes-Discover paddling strokes that are efficient and effective for the canoe tripper. Mike Patterson.

Women in the Stern- Break the stereo-type! There are many very good reasons why it's better for the woman to paddle the stern with the man in the bow. Learn why and give it a try! Jim and Lisa Lisius.

Reflector Oven Baking- Learn how to properly use a reflector oven and taste the fruits of your efforts! Dave and Lynne Lewis.

Essential Knots - Discussion & Demo - Handy knots for camp and on the water. Harry Rock

Canoe Trip First Aid-Prevention and treatment of common injuries associated with paddling and canoe tripping. Discussion of First Aid Kits. Jane Barron.

Intermediate Paddling-Learn some finesse, improve those strokes you've worked so hard to learn. This session will increase your skills and enjoyment. Shawn Burke.

Intorduction to Freestyle Paddling - Best described as "Ballet on water". Synchronized paddling strokes allow for precise boat control and a true sense of "Motion Pleasure". Kim Gass.
